The story follows the life of Asa Asada, a plucky girl born into a massive, poverty-stricken family in post-war Japan. Her journey begins in 1959, just as the devastating Typhoon Vera hits Nagoya. Amidst the chaos of the storm, Asa is kidnapped by a disgraced former WWII pilot named Kasuga. Together, they survive the disaster only to witness something impossible: a massive, unidentified creature rising from the ocean. Years later, in 1964, as Tokyo prepares for the first Olympics, the monster returns. Asa, now a skilled pilot, is recruited by a secret government faction to fly into the heart of the storm. Spanning from 1959 to the year 2020, the series is a "serialized manga novel" that explores Japan's recovery, its obsession with progress, and the shadows of its past.
