Overview

Synopsis

Lex Williams was a young man facing a bleak future after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Lost and looking for a sign from the universe, he makes a wish that changes everything. He is suddenly bound to the Midnight Inn System, a powerful interdimensional entity that grants him the role of "The Innkeeper."
Lex is transported to a mysterious location where he must build and manage the Midnight Inn, a sanctuary for beings from across the multiverse—ranging from powerful cultivators and galactic sovereigns to ordinary humans. While Lex himself starts as a weak mortal, the Inn provides him with absolute authority and protection within its walls. As he expands his business, he must navigate complex interdimensional politics, "recruit" exotic workers, and manage various "Systems" that the universe's original creator has scattered about. All the while, Lex hides his true identity as a weak human, bluffing his way through encounters with gods and monsters to protect his guests and grow his legend.

Notes

Special Notes

  • Genre Subversion: The novel is noted for its comedic "Deadpool-esque" meta-humor, frequently calling out and subverting common cultivation tropes and cliches.
  • Modern Cultivation: Unlike traditional high-fantasy Xianxia, it incorporates modern elements, starting on Earth before expanding into a sprawling, newborn universe.
  • Volume Releases: The author has begun packaging chapters into books for Amazon/Kindle, with Book 1 released in 2022 and subsequent volumes following as the story reaches major milestones.
  • Family Plotline: A major secondary plot involves Lex’s family, who are revealed to be far more significant in the cultivation world than he ever suspected, leading to a complex web of clones, secrets, and eventual confrontations.

Librarian's Notes

The Innkeeper might be one of the most unique novels I've ever read—the best among modern novels. How should I say it... I really respect the author. As someone who writes himself, I really love the way the author expresses himself through this novel. If you read it, you'll find that the author is enjoying himself more than the readers, which might be the most underrated part of the novel. This might not be a masterpiece... but this novel and the author are worthy of respect. If I have to talk about the other aspects—the world-building is good, the power system is good... how should I say, there's nothing to complain about. This might be one of the best novels for casual readers out there. So if you have time and are looking for a casual or good read, go for it—you won't regret it.
