Overview

Synopsis

Seol Jihu was a trash-tier human being. A gambling addict who betrayed his family, lost his lover, and ruined his life on Earth, he eventually found himself in Lost Paradise, a parallel world where "Earthlings" are summoned to fight a losing war against the Parasite Queen. Even there, he died a pathetic death. However, with his dying breath, he sent his "emotions" back to his past self.
Waking up years in the past with no clear memories but a crushing sense of regret and a restored ability to see the "color" of fate (opportunities and dangers), Seol Jihu vows to change. He returns to Lost Paradise, not as a loser, but as the "Son of God Gula." The story follows his brutal journey of redemption as he tries to atone for his sins on Earth while becoming the spearhead of humanity's survival in a world that has already seen its dark future.

Notes

Special Notes

  • Character Realism: The novel is frequently praised for its depiction of addiction and the "cringe-worthy" but realistic flaws of the protagonist, though his "man-child" moments in the middle arcs are a point of debate among fans.
  • Shared Universe: The Second Coming of Gluttony takes place in the same multiverse as the author's previous work, Memorize. Characters and lore from Memorize occasionally overlap or are referenced, leading to a much larger overarching narrative.
  • Webtoon Controversy: The manhwa adaptation faced significant criticism from novel fans for cutting content and changing character designs. It eventually went on an indefinite hiatus after two seasons, leaving the story unfinished in visual format.
  • Gourmet Subplot: The novel features a strangely detailed and recurring obsession with ramen, which becomes a comedic staple of the protagonist's personality.

Librarian's Notes

One of the most underrated novels I've ever read. How should I say this—I'll be a little biased towards this one because it's one of the few novels I read before 2020 (the corona era). I was in school with board exams coming up the next year, so I didn't get enough time to watch anime. The internet was crappy and I remember my phone's battery didn't even last 1 hour of YouTube. So what to do? And then came novels. This is one of the best novels I've ever read—the writing is good, the plot is good and believable, the world-building is fantastic (chef's kiss). Its prequel "MEMORIZE" was similarly excellent. I think I understand why it's not as famous as LOTM or RI, but seriously, it's that level good. I remember missing two trains because I was so engrossed in reading this. One of the most memorable novels in my life. The manhua got cancelled by the way, but if I ever get a chance, I want this novel to get an anime or webtoon—the author deserves it. Basically, read it. If you're looking for something good and the genres fall under your choice, don't hesitate—go for it!
